Intuition vs Emotional Reactivity: How to Tell the Difference

There was a time in my life when I truly thought the world was out to get me.

I’d be fine one minute—clear-headed, emotionally okay—and then I’d walk into a store or be around a group of people and spiral. I couldn’t tell what was mine anymore. That’s when I realized I didn’t know the difference between intuition and emotional reactivity—and it was affecting everything.

That was the start of my spiritual awakening. I was a highly sensitive clairsentient empath with no real tools or language for what was happening. And I mistook everything for intuition—every hunch, every anxious ping, every fear-based decision I made in survival mode.

But intuition isn’t fear. It’s not urgency, guilt, or emotional chaos.

It’s quiet clarity.

So how do you tell the difference?

How Can You Tell the Difference Between Intuition and Emotional Reactivity?

Here’s the short answer:
Intuition is calm, neutral, and grounded—even when it asks you to stretch. Emotional reactivity, on the other hand, is charged. It’s tied to past pain, unconscious fears, or energy you’ve picked up from others.

It can be hard to tell the difference when you’re disregulated, especially if you’re an empath or someone skilled at reading people’s energy. But there’s a rhythm and tone to intuitive guidance that becomes clearer with practice.

Here’s a quick comparison:

Intuitive GuidanceEmotional Reactivity
Calm and neutral—even if inconvenientFeels urgent, panicked, or dramatic
Feels like a knowing, not a thoughtSpinning thoughts, emotional spirals
Often subtle, slow, or quietLoud, impulsive, overwhelming
Grounded in the present momentRooted in past wounds or triggers
Comes without shame, guilt, or fearDriven by negative emotion or trauma
Physically expansive or lightPhysically tight, contracted, or buzzy

I Couldn’t Tell What Was Mine: My Experience as a Clairsentient Empath

During my awakening, I didn’t know how to filter or process energy. My nervous system was constantly overwhelmed. I’d walk into a room and suddenly feel like I had to leave, like something was wrong—but it wasn’t my intuition. I was just absorbing.

I lived in survival mode. Hyperaware. Guarded.
I didn’t just walk into spaces—I scanned them. I would psychoanalyze everyone around me: What were they thinking? What were they hiding? Was something off? I couldn’t stop trying to read the energy in the room because my system didn’t feel safe unless I knew everything.

It was exhausting.
And I questioned everything and trusted nothing—including myself.

That’s the tricky part—when you’re flooded emotionally, it’s hard to hear your inner guidance because your system isn’t safe enough to receive.

That’s not failure. That’s physiology. And it’s fixable.

Why Intuition Needs a Regulated Nervous System

Your intuition doesn’t shout.
It doesn’t manipulate you with shame or blame.
And it can’t come through clearly when your body is bracing for attack.

When your nervous system is stuck in fight, flight, or freeze, you’re primed to react—not receive.

Intuition flows through safety, not stress.
It’s like trying to tune into a soft whisper on the radio… when static and screeching alarms are blaring in the background.

That’s why healing your nervous system—through grounding, breath, movement, or stillness—is key to hearing what’s real.

Emotional Reactivity vs Intuitive Guidance: How to Read Energy Clearly

If you’re someone who naturally picks up on subtle cues or sensations, you may think you’re intuitive—but you might actually be reading energy, not receiving guidance.

There’s a difference.

Signs you’re absorbing or reacting instead of intuitively knowing:

  • You feel fine until you’re around others—and then spiral.
  • You suddenly feel shame, fear, or dread with no clear reason.
  • Your body tenses and your thoughts start racing after being in a certain space.

That’s not your intuition—that’s your body responding to the energy around you.

Ask More Than Just “Is This Mine?”

“Is this mine?” is a great starting point. But here are more questions to help you build discernment:

  • Would I normally think like this on my own?
  • Did this feeling come out of nowhere, or build slowly?
  • Is this voice compassionate or condemning?
  • Does this feel like truth—or like something I’ve learned from fear?
  • If I get still, what does my body say?

Pause. Breathe. Then listen. You’ll usually feel a shift.

Use Shadow Work to Tell the Difference Between Intuition and Emotional Reactivity

One of the biggest reasons we confuse reactivity with intuition is because unhealed emotional wounds hijack our clarity.

That’s where shadow work comes in.

Shadow work helps you uncover unconscious fears, limiting beliefs, and emotional triggers that cloud your ability to trust yourself.

As you begin integrating your shadows, your inner world softens—and your intuition gets louder.

Try one of these shadow work exercises for beginners:

  • What part of me feels threatened by this situation?
  • When was the first time I felt like this?
  • What am I afraid will happen if I don’t act on this feeling?

The more you meet those parts with compassion, the less they need to scream for your attention.

Try This: A Body-Based Intuition Check

The body doesn’t lie. When you’re unsure, try this 60-second practice:

  1. Get quiet. Put one hand on your heart or belly.
  2. Ask your question aloud or silently.
  3. Breathe. Notice: Does your body soften or tighten?
  4. Ask again: Is this fear… or truth? Is this mine… or someone else’s?

If it feels like a push or a panic, it’s likely reactivity.
If it feels neutral, grounded, and clear, even when it’s inconvenient—it’s probably intuition.

Final Thoughts: Discernment Is a Practice, Not a Perfect Process

If you’ve been confusing emotional overwhelm with intuitive guidance, you’re not broken. You’re learning to hear yourself beneath the noise.

Discernment takes repetition, reflection, and deep self-trust.

When you begin to clear the emotional static—by regulating your nervous system, doing shadow work, and tuning into your body—you unlock the clearest guidance you’ve ever known.
